Texas doctor facing federal drug charges and other allegations

A Texas doctor is facing charges involving the illegal distribution of controlled substances that ultimately resulted in the deaths of five individuals. In addition to the drug charges, he is also facing criminal charges for health care fraud. He was arrested after a 15-count indictment from a federal grand jury for distribution of a controlled substance resulting in death or serious bodily injury and health care fraud resulting in death. If convicted, he is facing 20 years to life in prison.

Serious drug charges

While all drug charges are a serious threat to one’s future, federal drug charges are particularly serious. If convicted of federal charges, a defendant could face decades or the rest of his or her life behind bars. This doctor is accused of distributing substances that include fentanyl, hydromorphone, morphine and other drugs to patients while practicing physical medicine and rehabilitation. Allegedly, five people died from overdoses because of this.

The health care fraud charges stem from allegedly billing insurance for services he did not actually provide. The indictment and arrest came after an investigation performed by multiple government agencies. While the case against him is strong, an indictment is not a pronouncement of guilt.

His defense strategy

When facing federal drug charges, the stakes are exceptionally high. This Texas defendant would be wise to work quickly to secure appropriate and experienced defense counsel as soon as possible. A knowledgeable defense attorney can provide guidance regarding the most effective way to confront the charges against him. With the right help, he may be able to avoid a conviction or secure an outcome with less severe penalties.
