Multiple cases dismissed by Dallas prosecutor

On Sept. 6, 2018, a female police officer with the Dallas Police Department shot and killed an unarmed man. She stated that she thought the man was burglarizing her apartment, but the man was actually in his own apartment. She was charged with murder and fired from the police department.

As a result, the Dallas district attorney has filed numerous motions with the court asking for at least nine cases to be dismissed. In those cases, the investigating or arresting officer was the female officer.

Some of the motions actually state that the fired officer was "indicted for murdering an innocent man in his own home." Four of those cases involved two men who were detained in a traffic stop. They were facing drug charges and one man was charged with unlawfully carrying a weapon. The drugs were reportedly marijuana and cocaine. The department has returned the firearm to the man who was charged.

Right now, it is not known how many cases could end up dismissed because she was the arresting officer. The woman could be called to testify in a case. However, her indictment for murder would undoubtedly be brought up by the defense.

For those that are facing felony state or federal charges, it is important to have an attorney by your side who understands how the cases move through the justice system. Not all cases will end up being dismissed; however, an experienced defense attorney may be able to find another reason why the charges should be dismissed. An attorney can help you develop a defense strategy that could help mitigate the possible penalties or result in an acquittal or a dismissal.
